Lance Stephenson: Lucky... in Kentucky?
New York is the largest media market in the world. So naturally the talent that the city produces is going to be thoroughly documented and at times over publicized. However, the Big Apple has been home to larger than life skills that fit the billing. Players who graced NYC playgrounds and gyms include: Lamar Odom, Stephon Marbury, Kenny Anderson, Felipe Lopez, Erik Barkley, Sebastian Telfair and the most recent addition, Lance Stephenson.
Dwanye "Tiny Morton is the head coach at Lincoln High in Brooklyn, NY. Morton recently and currently taught a couple of the most hyped players in the history of hype. Sebastian Telfair and the heir to the NYC basketball throne Lance Stephenson. Morton is held in high regard by his community and rightfully so. But the Coach takes it all in stride, the good with the bad. Like the time that ESPN did the documentary on Telfair and sure enough, the kid sprains his ankle.
A hobbled Telfair was chomping at the bit to play. Was his drive to play, because he is a competitor? Or was it because his brothers conditioned him to never back down and taught him that when the " lights are on", their on? Or finally was it because Sebastian didn't want to let down his Coach? Could it be the point in the kids life when all of the things in his life culminated? Coach Morton has known Sebastian since he was 6 years old:
“My earliest memory of Sebastian was him roller-skating in the park and dribbling a basketball at the same time,” says Dwayne “Tiny” Morton, Telfair’s coach at Lincoln. “Maybe he was 6. I thought it was kind of stupid, but I think it really helped him with his balance and coordination.”
When it came time for the native son to choose a school, there was no other option for Telfair other than to attend Lincoln. After all his cousin Stephon had flourished and thrived under then assistant coach Morton's guidance:
“Some of my earliest memories are of watching my cousin Stephon play for Lincoln,” says Sebastian. “When I was 12, I got in a fight with my sister, and my mom wouldn’t let me watch Lincoln play in the city championships. That was the death penalty of punishments. I cried all night long.”
Lance Stephenson's hype is bigger than your hype. Stephenson has eye popping talent, with a dynamic skill set and ever-improving jumper. Stephenson was awarded the 2008 NYC Daily News Player of the Year at the 40/40 club in May. The kid led his Railsplitter squad to a huge PSAL championship game win at Madison Square Gardens, he tallied 27 points and 8 rebounds. A week later he led the team to a second straight state Federation 'AA' championship. He was plagued by early foul trouble but, managed 16 points and 12 rebounds.
An injured ankle sidelined Stephenson for the first few weeks of his Junior campaign. He was later suspended for fighting a teammate. In addition he sat out the first round of the state tournament, a reason was never disclosed. Lance Sr. remains confident that his son will not fall in the same trap that friend and fellow phenom O.J. Mayo (allegedly) landed in:
"We have a pretty solid circle, It's just me, his Mom and Lance. "We're hard-working people," Stephenson Sr. said. "We don't have people knocking on our doors and we don't entertain it. Usually, people who fall into temptation want to do it. We just want to play basketball."

If he gets his act under control, focuses only on basketball and stays away from the proverbial dark side, then the sky is the limit for the prodigy. The list of schools produced by the Stephenson camp is almost certainly subject to daily change. The most recent one we seen listed: UK, Kansas, UNC, St. Johns, Memphis and IU. However Stephenson again listed USC in the interview at the bottom of the article.
I heard something today that holds especially true to NYC basketball: Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.
If your prepared in the city that never sleeps opportunity will come a knocking. In the end, the only person that could stop Lance, would be himself. If Lance remains on the straight and narrow he could easily sustain his lottery status. I only hope that the image that his parents and coach Morton projects of themselves is the same persona that is tutoring the potential All American. Stephenson can ill-afford to have off the court issues, keep him off the court. After all, luck is the idol of the idle and Lance is at his best when on a fast break, with his foot on the gas.
Stephenson updated his recruiting status and talked about Kentucky in this recent interview with Alex Schwartz:
NB: There’s been a lot of reports lately about what colleges you’re considering. Can you just clear up the air and let me know what schools you are officially considering?
LS: UCLA, USC, and Kansas.
NB: What about Kentucky?
LS: Oh yeah, I like Kentucky, [it’s] a good school. I’m looking at every school, so if I just tell you a name of a school, that doesn’t really mean I’m actually going to really go there, I’m just looking at them real hard right now.
NB: Are there any other schools that are a little bit further behind . . . that you’re also considering? Anyone in particular?
LS: Memphis, St. John’s, [Pause] Indiana, and North Carolina.
NB: Does St. John’s have a bit of an edge in some ways because [it] is the home state school?
LS: Oh yeah, I was really looking at St. John’s. I think I can bring New York back [to prominence], so I’m really looking at that right now.
NB: What are going to be some of the factors in your decision?
LS: [A] good place surrounding and a good coach.
NB: You mentioned USC. What do you think about the whole OJ Mayo situation right now?
LS: I think that it’s real messed up, but [Pause] somebody did the wrong thing around him and I don’t think that should have happened, but . . . I don’t think I’m going to be in his league. I’m just focused on school and basketball right now.

Humble, Derrick Favors in no Hurry to Make Decision
Derrick Favors is pretty much a household name at this point. Favors graces the top 5, in every major publication in the nation. Favors has that factor to his advantage so he is enjoying the recruiting process and soaking up the attention. Favors list of potential suitors are pretty much a who’s who list of college basketball and has always included 15 or more programs. Favors, was recently asked what schools he is considering, he went on to rail off,
“Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Memphis, UConn, N.C. State, Texas,” he eagerly said with a smile.
Favors went on to name off another formidable list,
“Indiana, Illinois, Miami,” he continued. “Florida State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke.”
Favors has made it clear for sometime that his decision will be a well thought out one, he wants to find that perfect fit for his 6′9 235 pound frame. Over Memorial Day weekend Favors gave the schools on his list a reason to be patient, leading his Atlanta Celtics AAU squad to the Tournament of Champions Title over Kenny Boynton and Team Breakdown in the U17 championship game. Favors had a triple double in the final scoring 20 points, pulling down 16 boards and declining 11, two-point transactions. When asked about his time frame for a decision Favors said,
“I probably won’t make a choice until next April,”
Favors has been rumored to be leaning towards choosing a school close to his family and support system. Gergia Tech has long been in with Favors. The Yellow Jackets are probably the team to beat at this point for the kids services. Georgia is fresh off of a Cinderella S.E.C. tournament win and has peaked the interest of Mr. Favors as well. Derrick’s Coach’s, Family and Friends have been title lipped for the most part on which way he is leaning. When Favors was asked what the determining factor would be for his decision he stated,
“What feels right,”
“What feels right” to most people, is what they are familiar with and those three words may very well be the difference in the frantic frenzy for Favor’s phenomenal presence
Bishop Mcguiness: Home of the Monster Daniel Orton
In March, 2008 The Bishop McGuinness Irish won their third consecutive class 4A title. The venue was Jim Norick State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City,OK. The Irsih came into the game a heavy favorite and did not disappoint. Out of the gate the Irish pressured and Intimidated the outgunned, eighth ranked Southeast Spartan’s. Irish guard, Gabe Ikard even sank a three at the buzzer of the first half, securing a 38-26 lead. The second half was more of the same, led by Daniel Orton’s (above center) defensive presence. Because of the shots altered or rejected by the monster, the Spartans failed to sustain any offensive consistency. Orton was the second leading scorer on his team, posting 14 points, 11 rebounds and most notably 7 blocks. Orton did however foul out of the game late in the fourth quarter, but his aggressive tactics paid off with a 80-63 win for the Irish.
Orton has seen first hand what the recruiting process is like. His older brother Terrence Crawford was recruited by Coach Sutton at Oklahoma St. and by other divison 1 programs throughout the mid-west. Crawford finally decided to play at Oklahoma State.
The Kentucky fan base would be thrilled if Mr Orton wound up a Wildcat. Orton is a wide body standing 6′9, 270 pounds . He is agile enough and has a very mean streak to his game. Orton is extremely tenacious when motivated,but has been tabbed as lazy or uninterested at times. I think that his teams record should be more of a testament to Orton’s game. After all, Bishop Mcguiness has won 3 consecutive class 4A titles in the state of Oklahoma. In Orton’s recent interview with Matt Jone’s, Orton updated his level of interest in the Wildcat’s:
Orton says he has “strong” interest in UK. He’s good friends with John Wall he says, and just kinda laughed about the rumor he and Wall will go to a school together. Says he loves Gillispie and Lexington is a beautiful town.
He also lists a bunch of other schools and wants to narrow down to 5 schools by Spring.
Orton says UK “should” get one of his 5 official visits.
SI.com ranked the Irish #11 in the 07-08 ,Top 25 athletic programs, Louisville’s St Xavier was also on the list at #25 - RANKINGS
#11-Bishop McGuinness (Oklahoma City) Enrollment: 662With the right mix of luck and talent the Irish have claimed eight titles. Behind star junior Daniel Orton(6-foot-10), the Irish won their third consecutive class 4A state title. The football team beat Glenpool for its second straight title.
#25- St. Xavier (Louisville) Enrollment: 1,431St. X marked the spot atop the awards podium in both soccer and swimming and diving. On the football field, the all-boys school lost to intra-city rival Trinity in the 6A title game.

Rising Star: 2009 PF Reggie Buckner
In March of 08' Buckner led his Manassas squad to a huge win over an outgunned Jackson county squad. Buckner had 12 points but pulled down 16 rebounds in impressive fashion. The 6'8 Buckner set the tone for the game:
"Buckner's the difference because you can get by the other guys and he's there waiting on it." said Jackson County coach Gary Flynn
"We shot the ball bad, but as I said earlier, I think their defense was a lot of that. That's the best (Class) A team we've seen all year."
The 51-33 final marked the first time in 23 years that theTigers advanced in a state tounament game.
2009 Update: Shaunessy Smith
Smith had achieved some great things before his recent set back. As a sophomore he averaged over 19 points 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Smith also scored a season high 35 points against Nesoba central. Smith's coach loves his game
"I think Shaunessy is the best player in the state."
"He's so versatile, he has the ability to shoot, pass and run the point. He has the ability to creat space and give himself a shot. You don't find a lot of players who can do that."
Smith is a gym rat and can be found on the hardwood at least 6 days a week.
"Basketball is his hobby." said coach Billups
Smith's summer Coach is equally excited of his potential,
"I get excited when talking about the play and potential of Shaun," said Smith's travel team coach, Danny Pritchett, of the Birmingham Storm."
He can play all of the perimeter positions well and if the match-up is favorable, he can play power as well. Smith's high school does have strong ties to Miss St. Smith plays for former Bulldog guard T.J. Billups. Coach Stansberry has done a good job of keeping a lot of the recent talent in state Romero Osby, Quentin Smith and Tang Hamilton. Smith lives only about 20 miles from Starkville and has taken several unofficial visits to the campus.
Checking in on Duncanville's Shawn Williams
The past six months of Williams life, have solidified him as one of the top prospects in the 09′ class. Williams has developed confidence in his game, showcasing it against the best in the nation. Not only on the AAU circuit, but the high school hardwood as well. Williams is a proven winner as his Panthers squad posted a 53 game winning streak until running into Oak Hill Academy late in December, 2007.
The Duncanville Panthers played two of the toughest opponents that a team could play. First the Panthers squared off against Oak Hill Academy. The game was a barn burner to say the least and ended in overtime on a missed shot in the lane by Williams. Oak Hill won the game 78-77. Williams was the second best player on the court, posting 21 points and 16 rebounds. Williams did however miss a shot in a lane at the buzzer that would have secured a Panther win. Brandon Jennings was the reason that Oak Hill won putting up 34 points on 32 shots.
The Panthers then went on to the Beach Ball Classic, in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. After struggling early, but managing to advance to the title game. Franklin, Williams and fellow 2009 recruit Reger Dowell played like they had something to prove in the finale against Wheeler (GA), wining the game 69-57. Roger Franklin was named MVP of the Tournament, but is was Williams 23 points and 12 boards that secured the win against Wheeler.
“Our record speaks for itself,” Duncanville forward Shawn Williams said. “We’ve lost one game in two years. No matter how we look, we are going to find a way to win.”
In early May Williams narrowed his list, listing Florida as his leader. Kentucky, Texas, UCLA, Arkansas. Louisville and Baylor are still firmly in the mix.
Anthony Johnson Mentions Leader, Cat's Still on th List
We do think that Johnosn is the second best prospect in his class, in Illinois, behind the freakishly talented Illinois commit, Jereme Ricmond. However, Johnson has the potential to be an All-American in his own right.
Johnson attends Whitney Young Magnet High in Chicago, IL. The same Whitney Young that Marcus Jordan transferred to from Loyola Academy. If you didn’t know, Jordan was allowed entrance into the prestegious Magnet school after submitting an application. The Jordan’s and the school board were scrutinized a bit for Jordan being allowed to “transfer” and not to be tested for admission. In the end, it was brought to light that the proper procedures were followed by all parties. The Whitney Young Dolphin’s have been home to more than their fair share of talent over the years. Dolphin alum include Quentin Richardson, Chris Hicks and most notably Russell Maryland.
Head Coach Tony Slaughter has loaded roster for this coming season and the expectations are high: Marcus Jordan, Anthony Johnson, 5′6 point guard Amhad Starks, top 150 09′ shooting guard Chris Colvin and the 6′6, 2011 athletic prospect Sam Thompson. The Dolphins have the talent and experience to win the title in 09′.
There has been some mutual interest between UK and Johnson. However, Johnson has been on campus at Notre Dame and Illinois. On June 18, Johnson named a leader
“I talked to Coach Major and Coach Matta [Ohio State] today and the talk went really well,” said Johnson. “I think right now I could say Ohio State is my new leader. I like Ohio State a whole lot … I also like Iowa, Purdue, Illinois, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Texas and some others.”
Getting to Know Noel Johnson
As a freshman at Lovejoy High, Johnson was tabbed as one of the top prospects in the state. Now the senior to be at Fayette County high is one of the top prospects in the nation. However the grounded Johnson keeps everything in the right perspective:
“I just look at myself as just another individual that plays basketball.”
Noel’s family and support system has always had him involved in athletics. Johnson’s father was a star at Wchita State and played one season for the Golden State Warriors. Johnson has inherited his fathers athletic ability to go along with his 6′7, 180 pound frame. The kid has developed the ability to aggressively attack the rim and sports an improved jumper.
Johnson lists his parent as the biggest role models in his life:
“Both of my parents ‘cause they want me to strive to be the best at everything I do.”
Johnson’s father has had Noel mentored and tutored by some of the classiest people associated with the game:
- Xavier McDaniel is Johnson’s godfather.
- Nate “Tiny” Archibald, teaches Johnson ball handling ,court vision and awareness drills.
- Former Hawk Mike Glenn teaches him shooting and helps to mold him into a well rounded student/athlete (Johnson carries a respectable B average)
- The first ever African American to sign a scholarship at UNC, Charlie Scott helps Johnson with offensive consistency.
“We knew they were not going to get rattled,” Johnson said. “We just had to keep our composure.”
Mfon Udofia, who led Miller Grove to its first trip to the semifinals, finished with a game-high 30 points. Johnson went on to be named to the State AAA first team along with Mfon Udofia.
Johnson recently said:
“As of right now, I’m still open and looking at all colleges (and have) no favorites.”
When Johnson was asked what was looking for in a program and coach he added:
“(I’m looking for) A coach that enjoys the game as much as I do but at the same time wants to help each and every player reach the next level.”
“I’m looking at how important the school takes education. Also, I’m looking at how the school takes care of their alumni.”
The Cat’s seem to fit the criteria. If the staff was to force the issue they could argue both points as good as any other team.
Lakeem Jackson: Making a Smooth Transistion
Lakeem Jackson is one of the most compelling prospects in the 2009 class. His smooth, rangy frame blends nicely with his ability to attack the rim. To some extent, Jackson has had to play second fiddle to the heralded Plumlee boys. If needed, Jackson is more than capable of being his teams primary option. In mid December in a tight game against game foe, Greensboro Day. It was Jackson who led his #1 ranked team to a 59-55 win. Greensboro day played superb defense on the pair of Plumlee’s. Jackson then seen a weakness in the defense and exploited it:
“It was a bad matchup for us,” Greensboro Day coach Freddy Johnson said of Jackson. “We had nobody to guard him on the team. We knew that going into the game. We just hoped they didn’t discover it.
“They did, though.”
“Lakeem is doing all the right things (academically and athletically),” Gaines said. “And then you add that to the kind of spring he is having (in offseason tournaments), and his stock has really risen. He’s cleared some hurdles, and now (the offers) are inevitably coming.”
Jackson’s most recent offer came from Georgia Tech in June of 08′ The Yellow Jackets threw their name into a ring that currently includes: Clemson, Marquette and South Carolina. As you may, or may not know the Wildcat staff has showed interest in Jackson for sometime now, however no offer has been extended.

Clarence Trent: Learning, Maturing and Ballin' at Findlay Prep
“I’ve been making better decisions in all parts of my life,” Trent said. “The last three years, I just wasn’t doing what I should’ve been doing. I even flunked an English class. So, me going to prep school was the best thing for me. It’s hard knowing I should be ahead of where I am with school, but it’s actually helped because prep ball has tested me in so many ways.”
On a side note Charles Garcia, a 6′10 220 pound JUCO kid, committed to Lorenzo Romar’s Washington Huskies a couple of days ago. Garcia said that he would sign in November and be available in the 09′-10′ season. Smith said that UK had been in contact, here is the article
Lawrence North High & UK: Tragic Past Leads to a Bright New Era
“John was the neatest young man I’ve ever coached,” Lawrence North Head Coach
Keefer said. “This is probably the low point of my life.”
Coach Jack Keefer has been coaching the Lawrence North Wildcats in Indianapolis, IN since 1975. Through highs and lows, Coach Keefer has always put a competitive team on the hardwood, including 2 State Titles. The Wildcats produced one of the top prospects of the 1990 class, Eric Montross. Montross was a McDonald’s All American and went on to play at UNC and won a national title in 1993 against Michigan. In 1994 Montross was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Boston Celtics.
Until 2005 Montross was probably the most accomplished player to graduate from Lawrence North. Keefer also coached the 2005 McDonald’sgame, that was held in South Bend (IN) at Notre Dame. Keefer was truly smitten by the nomination.
“It’s a great chance to meet and teach the best high school players in the
country and share their passion for basketball.”
The Wildcats produced one of the most hyped duo’s of all time in 2006, in Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. Both Oden and Conley Jr. were huge stars at Ohio St. their freshman season, leading the team to its first appearance in the title game since 1962.
Fast forward 2 years and another duo has been thrust onto the national stage. A pair of 2010 prospects are drawing scouts and coaches from across the country. Dominique Ferguson is a 6′9 , 195 pound, power forward. Personally, I have not seen the kid play, but by all indicators he is among the elite players in his class. I would be shocked if Ferguson does not remain a 5-star player. As you may or may not know, Ferguson has verbally committed to UK, spurning heavy interest from Florida, IU, Illinois, Purdue, Wake Forest and most notably Mr. Thad Matta’s Buckeye’s.
The other stud currently on the squad is 6′6, 185 pound small forward Justin Martin. This kid has played somewhat in the shadows of Ferguson, but is a very good player in his own right. By the 2010 season Martin should be tagged a solid four star player. Scouts, Inc had this to say about the kids game,
“Justin Martin looks a lot like and models his game a lot like the former
Indiana Pacers great, Reggie Miller. Rail thin and a great shooter, Martin is
also a very good athlete as well. He needs to work on his ball skills because he
is going to need to learn to create his own shot at some point in his high
school career. Martin also needs to assert himself more because for a player as
talented as he is, he often seems lost in the shuffle when you watch him play.
There is no denying his skill and his talent, but he needs to become mentally
tougher and make sure his presence is felt when he is on the court. Strength
gain is a must as well.”
Martin has a long list of potential suitors. However, he lists Kentucky, Xavier and Michigan State as his favorites. Home state power IU may also be in good shape to land Martin. As Martin has liked the Hoosiers and Coach Crean for sometime, the combination may prove tough to resist if an offer materializes.
Lawrence North is a school worth keeping an eye on for Cat’s fans. Some of the biggest battles over explosive top 50 talent are sure to unfold within the Indianapolis city limits. For UK, it’s good to see the staff’s presence in Indianapolis again, breathing new life into a ill-fated past.
Getting to Know Oak Hill Academy
Oak Hill’s record before the 84-85 season was a respectable 150 - 29, not bad? Enter Coach Steve Smith at the helm and 22+ seasons later they are the nations most prestigious High School basketball team. Smith has been taking opponents to the wood shed to the tune of a 704 - 44 record and 7 National #1 Rankings (High School Champions). If your wondering, like I was about why Coach Smith doesn’t Coach college ball, then watch the 2nd newest video on the right. Oak Hill is 22 - 3 this season and sits at 19 in the USA Today Super 25 poll. Oak Hill has produced 20 NBA players including 19 draft picks and 5 lottery selections:

Rajon Rondo has put his stamp on the Oak hill record books. He holds the single season assist record 494 and the single game record 31. Rondo has the second best single game scoring effort (55 points) in the schools history. Oak Hill has had 4 players play for the University of Kentucky, Rajon Rondo, Cliff Hawkins, Jules Camara and Ron Mercer ( In the back of my mind I always thought that UK had more of a pipeline with Oak Hill than 4 players). Oak Hill also had a couple of players attend UofL, Luke Whitehead and Alex Sanders. Below is a picture from an Alumni game that was played in 2007 Rondo is middle right with the black t-shirt on.
Oak Hill currently has a bevy of talent on the roster including hoops phenom Brandon Jennings, who is the #1 Point Guard in the class of 08′. Jennings dropped 49 on Dudley High earlier in the year and is averaging over 30 points per game this season. Oak Hill is also home to the eighth wonder of the world Keith “Tiny” Gallon. Tiny is a 6′8 270 pound junior. Gallon can bang in the post or shoot the 15 footer with consistency. Gallon has soft hands and runs the floor surprisingly well for a kid his size. Gallon is a top 30 player in the class of 09′ and has a list of schools that includes UK.
Bio:Keith, known as “Tiny” to everyone, calls Humble, Texas his hometown. He is considered one of the top front court players nationally in the junior class. Tiny is an inside presence with skills to step out on the perimeter. He is an exceptional passer for a big man, and he can be a great rebounder when he wants to be. Tiny is the son of Ms. Sylvia Wright.
What I Like Most About Oak Hill: The teachers will help you in any way they can no matter what, and the coaches are very cool and make you work hard.
I am starting to really believe the Ken Bowman to Maryland thing. Look for Scout or Rivals to possibly break the news later today or tomorrow. This is more of a gut thing, I have heard nothing that has said that Bowman to Maryland for sure. Its just that all of the info points that way. The visit, the offer, the fact that scout.com just made a profile for the kid coinciding with Maryland Scout stating that they have breaking news on a commitment. All of that leads me to believe that Bowman will be a Terrapin. Whys it such a big deal for college players to get paid to play ball. If I am correct they can’t get a job to pay for anything. They dont need to get paid a lot or anything. Hell, theres no telling how much these kids bring into the colleges they represent any way. They just need to set a certain amount per year you are a player or even a flat amount to help these kids.
Think about it, how many kids you think leave for money, granted the NBA pays more but every bit helps. This will also lower the “benifactors” that pass money on to players. It could eliminate NCAA sanctions and even keep kids in college longer, thus making the colleges more money any how.
College if rough on the pocket book for most people, why not make it a little easier for some?

Tyreke Evans
In July 2007, Evans dropped Florida and Georgia Tech from his list of suitors. Evans’would go on to visit five schools before he made a decision: Louisville, Villanova, Texas, Memphis and Connecticut. Unfortunatly the beast of a shooting guard chose Memphis.
The question many may pose is “Did RickyP blow his chances by spending too much time on Evans and wear out his welcome?” Louisville has dedicated a lot of time into Evans since he was thirteen. The second question is Does it matter?” With Lousiville having one of the best rcruiting classes in the nation with Samardo Samuels in themix, Louisville Fans should be convinced they are in good hands.

Fitzgerald is having a spectacular junior season, averaging 22 points 18 rebounds and 3 blocks a game. He is a very hard worker with a knack for finding the ball ala Dennis Rodman with big time scoring potential. I know that his school doesn’t play top notch competition night in and night out, but they play tough opponents just as much as the next team. Andrew has good foot work and is aggressive in the lane. Fitzgerald is one of our favorite prospects in the 09′ class. Could easily be a 15 and 10 guy on the next level.

Armwood has been highly touted for awhile now and is doing well at living up to the expectations. Armwood is a 6′8 forward for Stu Vetter’s Montrose Christian Academy club during the school year. He ran with the WPC Elite at the DC Assault event where Bailey selected him as one of the Take Your Best Shot All-Tournament Selections as a 2nd Team member in the 17-U age group. He is among the top combo forwards in the nation.

Henson is lanky kid who can bang. Henson is more of a potential kid rather than a polished player. Henson is however one of the most promising players in the class. Henson averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks per game as a junior. In Jan 2008 Henson ended his recruitment, giving a verbal to UNC.
There are portions of every game that John Henson will dominate. At times with, guard play severely lacking last year, John had to create much of his offense for himself. He was a more effective offensive rebounder than defense rebounder, frequently getting tip jams and put-back dunks. A glaring weakness in his game was that he occasionally took himself out of possessions defensively by gambling and waiting out at the three point line. With rebounding already being a problem for the Dragons, they could ill-afford not having John in the paint for any reason. Plus, he is such a threat to block shots. John registered numerous triple doubles with points, rebounds, and blocks.

Jennings is a big time player. He can dribble drive or post his man up on offense. Jennings also has a strong presence on the defensive end of the court and can legitimately guard 3 positions. Jennings led his Pinewood High school to their third consecutive South Carolina class 3A title. Jennings was named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year. Milton averaged 18.9 points and 10.6 rebounds in his junior season. Jennings, has already given a verbal committment to Clemson.

Gaddy is a potent performer and has drawn a 5 star rating from every respected publication. As a sophomore Gaddy averaged 20 points and 8 assists per game. Gaddy is a well polished guard having superior speed and quickness. Gaddy also has a dependable jump shot and a great feel for the game. Gaddy withdrew his verbal from Arizona in May 2008, opening the flood gates for the future superstars services. Kansas has really gotten into the mix along with Memphis, Oregon, USC, Texas, Washington and Gonzaga. Gaddy has not ruled out Arizona as a destination.

Thompson is rated here more for his potential. Extremely athletic player who is getting better all of the tome. Thompson averages 18 points, 10 boards, 1 block and 1 steal per game this season. Thompson needs to work on his jump shot,but is a good student and a hard worker so he will improve. Hollis was relatively unknown coming into the summer and has exploded into a top 20 player in the class of 2009. Hollis has good length and athleticism for the wing position. He has the ability to post up, shoot the 3, pass and rebound. Thompson has a high basketball IQ and unlimited potential.Hollis led his team to a win over Redondo, CA 77 to 59, He finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds on 11/30/07.

Johnson is a strong athletic big bodied wing player. He has a nice touch from the outside but not afraid to go down low and bang. Johnson can guard the perimeter as well as the 4 on D. Johnson is a top tier prospect who will suit any rosters needs. Can be very explosive at times and will dunk on taller defenders. Likes to hang around the rim for the easy put back or dunk tip. Has been offered by, LSU,Virgina and Memphis.
6′8 Karron Johnson of Mount Zion Academy. Johnson scored 19 points and proved he can run the court in the 77-64 win by MZA over Northern Guilford. Northern Guilford put up a good fight in the first half going toe-to-toe with Johnson and company in the first quarter(16-16). The score became 34-26 Mount Zion at the half and then MZA exploded in the third quarter and went on an 11-2 run to open things up, then NG played hard the rest of the way but it wasn’t enough to stop Johnson and MZA. 1/22/08

McDonald has a silky soft touch and can penetrate with the best of them as well. Great guard prospect who should develop into one of the best shooters while at the college level. McDonald is a hard worker and a very coachable young man as well. His game is getting better all of the time. Not afraid to crash the boards, Solid defender, but working hard on becoming a lock down perimeter defender. Great work ethic, we love this kids game.

Paducah Tilghman proved that they are going to be a top team in the Bluegrass this season as they knocked off a very talented Briarcrest Christian squad, 70-63. Tilghman was led by 6’5 Isaac McClure who finished with 24 points (8-13 from the field), 11 rebounds and a handful of blocks. McClure was the best under-the-radar prospect we saw on Friday as he is a bouncy athlete that is aggressive inside despite his thin frame. Low-to Mid-Major programs looking for a high-energy forward should keep an eye on this senior. Other players that had big games for the winners include 6’5 senior Stefon Perry (16 points and 5 rebounds) and 5’10 junior Bryon Wright (20 points and 4 assists).Briarcrest was led by 6’4 junior Leslie McDonald’s 21 points and 12 rebounds. McDonald, ranked 16th in the country in the class of 2009, has a smooth scoring game. He shoots the ball well, especially in the midrange, and is tough to stop driving to the basket. McDonald is being recruited by all of the elite schools and he said that he is currently considering North Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, Indiana, Georgetown, Duke and Ohio State.

Orton is always mentioned in the same breath as the other top big men in the nation. Orton has a long solid build and his wide shoulders and good foot work will help him dominate the post at the college level as a freshman. Mr. Orton is a hard worker and has put a lot of time in the weight room. It is possible that Orton could be a NBA lottery pick after just one season of college ball. Orton already knows what the recruiting process is like, after watching his older brother Terrance Crawford. Terrance was recruited by schools throughout Oklahoma and Texas.
Orton says he has “strong” interest in UK. He’s good friends with John Wall he says, and just kinda laughed about the rumor he and Wall will go to a school together. Says he loves Gillispie and Lexington is a beautiful town. He also lists a bunch of other schools and wants to narrow down to 5 schools by Spring. Daniel Orton was just in grade school but he remembers like it was yesterday. Orton was in awe as Terrence Crawford, his older brother, attracted the attention of basketball coaches throughout the state. “I thought at the time that it would be cool to be recruited like that, but I never saw myself being that good,” Orton said. Cheek is a very aggressive and athletic wing who can score from anywhere on the court. Cheek has the ability and range to score 20+ on the college level. Cheek has helped his school shoot up the national rankings to among the tops in the north east. Cheek is a leader on the court and has a great head on his shoulders, a very coachable young man. St. Anthony’s head coach Bob Hurely had an interview with ZAGSBLOG. Hurley and Cheek both answer questions about where Cheek stands on his decision after his teams most recent game. As of 5/28/08 I would say the UCONN and Wake Forest are the leaders for his services.
Bob Hurley, the legendary head coach of St. Anthony in Jersey City, said his star junior, Dominic Cheek, will not attend North Carolina and that Cheek still remains wide open.
“He wasn’t ready to commit and they (North Carolina) had a kid from Texas who’s a wing player ready to commit, so they took the kid they thought they could get,”
The 6-5 Cheek recently told ZAGSBLOG that Villanova, Wake Forest, Pitt, Texas, Florida, Marquette, Seton Hall and Rutgers were all in the mix.“I’m still open right now. There’s no leader or anything,” he said.Hurley, who has a career record of 914-101, said his players were focused on winning the North Non-Public B State title, and that recruiting would take care of itself. He already has six seniors committed to Division I programs, including Rutgers-bound G Mike Rosario.“We’re just worrying about basketball,” Hurley said. “The entire country will have some interest in him. We just want to go about our business. We don’t want to worry about our list. He’s having fun just playing. “There’s a million opportunities (for Cheek). If you’re around, you have a chance to be in.”

Boynton is a pure scorer in every sense of the word he has the penetration, short range, mid range and lond range weapons in his bag of tricks. Boynton is lightning quick. A threat to score on every possesion. FloridaHoops.com Writer Rick Staudt had this to say to us about Boynton in an interview in the fall of 07′. Rick Pitino and his staff are putting the full court press on this young man. Boynton helped lead American Heritage to a dominating victory over Riverdale (TN) 86 to 61. He finished the game with 50 points on 11/28/07
Scoop - Florida is also home of the freakishly talented 2009 combo guard Kenny Boynton. Could you sum up his style of play for us and fill us in on what you know about any colleges that Kenny may be looking at?
Rick - I can use one word to sum up Kenny Boynton’s style of play: Attack. On both the offensive and defensive end he comes at you with everything he’s got. Boynton can score from anywhere and get his own shot. His play in the state tournament this past season was nothing short of amazing. Defensively, he gets right in there with the dribbler and does all he can to control him. The kid has been playing at the 17U level since the summer before eighth grade and continues to impress scouts and coaches each time out.
Boynton has been offered by all of the big time schools west of the Mississippi but hasn’t shrunk his list. It will be very interesting to find out where he decides to go.

Hamilton is alreaday a prolific scorer and has had at least 20 points in every box score that we can find. Great perimeter defender, very physical on D, can guard the post. Has the potential to be a lock down defender. Ranks in the top 15 nationally in his class, in most publications. Hamilton had 38 points and 13 rebounds on 1/26/08

“I think he’s a Carolina guard in the way he’s unselfish and about making players around him better,” said St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle,
Strickland said, “it was helpful to watch St. Pat’s teammates Corey Fisher, who plays for Villanova and Jeff Robinson, who plays for Memphis, go through the recruiting process.”"They talked about picking the right school, seeing yourself playing with that team, just making sure I make the right choice and stuff,”

DeMarcus is a dream prospect. He plays hard on both ends of floor. A physical precense who runs the floor well and gets high percentage shots almost every time down the court. Cousins has the potential to become a big time player at the college level and beyond. On January 22, his Leflore school (ranked #1 in the nation among public schools.) took on #2 Blount in the night cap of the MLK classic. Leflore (24-2) won 62 -48 behind Cousin’s 15 points 11 boards and 4 blocked shots. At one point during the game, Cousins blocked a shot and took the ball coast to coast for the jam.

Derrick is a smooth operator. Calm cool and collected until he catches the ball in the paint and goes into beast mode. Favors puts you in the mind of a Dwight Howard, with the power that he throws it down with around the basket. Strong post player but capable of making a 10 -12 foot fade away jumper as well. Has a nice arsenial of moves to rely on. Favors works just as hard on Defense and is always in good position to block/alter a shot and get the rebound. Runs the floor exeptionally well. There might be big men in this class that do one or two things better that him, but none with a more complete game.

Henry is a coaches nightmare. He is versatile enough to play against any sized player and still have the advantage. Great speed and quickness. His basketball IQ is through the roof. When you watch him play you feel like something huge is going to happen every time. Henry always seems to be in the right spot on the floor and also is a solid rebounder and defender. His game doesn’t have any huge holes. His father, Carl, played basketball at Kansas and his brother had an offer from the Jayhawks but chose to play professional baseball. Early in January of 08′ Henry was spotted wearing a Kansas sweatshirt? during one of his pre-game warm-ups.

Wall is quickly rising up high schools rankings to the No. 1 or No. 2 point guard according to most publications. We think that Wall has more potential to be a complete PG than Dextar Strickland. Wall is the fastest player in the class, with the ball in is hands. Wall’s ability to get to the basket reminds you of Ty Lawson. He has great ability to change speeds and get past defenders for an easy 2 or an easy dime. Wall went toe to toe with Tyreke Evans early in January and his Word of God team pulled out the win,on a last second tip, by Wall. Mr. Wall finished the game with 20+ points and 13 dimes. He is giving UK a good look at this point.

Renardo, in our opinion has more potential than anyone else in the 09′ class. His weight has flucuated over the past couple of seasons and his play did right along with it. Sidney is averaging 26.3 points and 14.5 boards this season. Sidney’s defensive skills do need some work, he is only averaging a half a block per game. Big time player and deserves to be mentioned among the top in his class. Sidney had 24 points and 22 rebounds on 1/26/08.

Lamb has an solid jumper up to about 18 feet, but his range gets better every year. Lamb could end up being a shooting guard or a distributing forward by the time he arrives on a college campus. Lamb is a solid 5 star prospect and is among the elite players in his class.

Johnson plays on a top tier high school team that is loaded with talent. We are really impressed with Johnson’s game. Johnson is a do it all guard that has a nice stroke form the perimeter as well he looks a bit like and plays like Delonte West. Has had a few problems but seems to be a pretty good kid. Can score in bunches from anywhere at anytime. We like him here because he has a ton of potential, clearly one of the best underclassmen in Illinois and the Nation. Johnson’s most recent offer was from Notre Dame after a visit late last year. The Wildcat staff has yet to extend an offer.

Turner’s Alabama Challenge AAU team made it to the 16 and under final at the Nike Memorial Day Classic before losing to the Illinois Warriors 75-70. Golden averaged over 15 points per game as a freshman and almost 24 as a sophomore.Golden is a tough, gritty guard that will fit nicely into the Buckeyes system at eith guard spot. Golden is extremely quick, deceptively fast and can create shots for himself and his teammates with ease. Golden is a born leader and his father an OSU grad is really involved in his sons life. Golden had Kentucky and Louisville on his list before verbally committing to Ohio St. late last summer.
